What is Radon?
Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is produced naturally by the breakdown of uranium in soil, water, and rock. It is present in outdoor air at very low levels and typically does not pose a health risk. However, when radon gas enters an enclosed space, like a home, it can build up to high levels and become a health hazard.
Why is Radon Testing Important?
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and is responsible for about 21,000 deaths each year in the United States. The Surgeon General and EPA recommend testing all homes for radon and taking action to reduce radon levels if they are high.
Types of Radon Tests
There are two main types of radon tests: short–term tests and long–term tests.
Short-term tests take 2–90 days and are used to get a general idea of the radon level in a home.
Long-term tests take 3–12 months and are used to get a more accurate measure of the radon level.
Most home inspection companies offer radon testing as an add–on service. If the radon level is found to be high, the home inspector can recommend a qualified radon mitigation contractor to reduce the level.
